05 June, 2025 : Millions of Muslims gathered in Saudi Arabia for the sacred Hajj pilgrimage have begun arriving at the Arafat plain from the tent city of Mina since early Thursday (9th Dhul-Hijjah). The plain, historically significant for Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Farewell Sermon, echoes with the chants of “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk” as pilgrims respond to the call of their Creator.
This year, the Hajj sermon at Arafat will be delivered by Sheikh Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, the esteemed Imam and Khatib of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. He will deliver the sermon and lead the Zuhr and Asr prayers at Masjid al-Namirah, located on the western edge of the Arafat plain.
The sermon will be broadcast worldwide in over 20 languages, including Bengali, English, French, Urdu, Malay, and others, via radio and television. The Bengali translation will be handled by Dr. Khalilur Rahman, AFM Wahidur Rahman, Mubinur Rahman, and Nazmus Sakib, all alumni of Umm al-Qura University in Makkah.
Presence at Arafat is the cornerstone of Hajj. On this day, pilgrims perform the combined Zuhr and Asr prayers and remain engaged in prayer, repentance, and seeking Allah’s mercy until sunset. Afterward, without performing the Maghrib prayer, they proceed to Muzdalifah, where they offer Maghrib and Isha prayers together and spend the night under the open sky, collecting pebbles for the ritual stoning of the devil.
On the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims return to Mina from Muzdalifah to perform the stoning ritual by throwing seven pebbles at each of the three Jamarat. Following this, they perform the sacrifice, with those under Saudi government arrangements receiving SMS confirmation of its completion. After the sacrifice, pilgrims shave their heads, don regular clothing, and proceed to circumambulate the Kaaba (Tawaf) and perform the Sa’i, running seven times between Safa and Marwah. Drinking ample Zamzam water is encouraged during this ritual.
On the 11th and 12th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims stay in Mina, throwing 21 pebbles daily at the three Jamarat. Those unable to leave Mina by the 12th must remain until the 13th, throwing an additional 21 pebbles. Before departing Makkah, pilgrims perform the Farewell Tawaf, which can be fulfilled by any optional Tawaf after the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah.
The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has warned that temperatures in Arafat may reach 45°C, urging pilgrims to follow weather updates, adhere to health guidelines, and use designated transport to avoid heatstroke. This year, 127,198 pilgrims from Bangladesh are expected to perform Hajj, with return flights scheduled from June 10 to July 10.
