Cox’s Bazar Woman Files Case Alleging Dowry Demands and Abuse

COox’s Bazar, June 4, 2025: A woman from Cox’s Bazar has filed a case against her husband, accusing him of dowry demands, physical and mental abuse, and forcing her to undergo an abortion. The complainant alleges that her husband subjected her to various forms of torture since their marriage and caused severe health complications by forcing an abortion against her will.

According to the complaint, the marriage took place at a hotel in Cox’s Bazar. Shortly after, the husband began mentally abusing her. Seven months into the marriage, when the complainant became pregnant, her husband pressured her to abort the pregnancy. When she refused, he resorted to physical and mental abuse. Eventually, against her wishes, he admitted her to a hospital and forced an abortion, leading to severe health complications for the complainant.
The abuse continued thereafter. The accused, citing business needs related to managing the “Khulna Tigers” BPL team, demanded dowry from the complainant. She was coerced into selling her gold ornaments and withdrawing money from her bank account, ultimately paying Tk 18 lakh as dowry under duress. Later, the complainant discovered that her husband had concealed his previous marriage and two children. Upon learning this, she decided to end the marriage and demanded the return of the dowry and her dower (mehr).
However, the accused pressured her to continue the marriage and demanded an additional Tk 10 lakh as dowry. He also threatened to leak intimate photos from their marital life online if she refused to comply. On May 1, 2025, when the complainant went to the accused’s residence in Gulshan to demand her marriage certificate and the dowry money, she was verbally abused, slapped, and threatened with severe physical harm, including death threats.
Following the incident, the complainant filed a case in court, seeking justice and immediate legal action against the accused. Local women’s rights organizations have condemned the incident and called on the authorities to ensure justice for the victim.
