Tangail, June 04, 2025 : With Eid-ul-Adha just two days away, people are rushing home to celebrate with their families, often resorting to risky modes of transport such as open trucks, pickup vans, and even bus rooftops. While the Dhaka-Tangail-Yamuna Bridge highway has not seen the usual traffic jams, there has been an increase in vehicle pressure, with passengers facing inflated fares.
On Wednesday (June 04), observations at Elenga Bus Station, Rabna Bypass, and Asheqpur Bypass revealed that many passengers were waiting for transport. Apart from buses, vehicles like trucks, pickups, local buses, lagunas, rented motorcycles, microbuses, and private cars were being used to ferry passengers. Due to a shortage of public transport and exorbitant fares, many are risking their lives by traveling on open trucks, pickups, and bus rooftops.
Passengers Suman Khan and Abid Khan, traveling from Mirpur, said it took four hours to reach Chandra due to traffic congestion up to Kaliakair. However, the stretch from Mirzapur to Tangail was free of jams. Another passenger, Jasimuddin, noted that the fare from Chandra to Tangail, previously Tk 60-70, has surged to Tk 200, with long waiting times for buses.
Kamrul Hasan, another traveler, mentioned waiting for nearly an hour at Rabna Bypass without finding a vehicle. He added that the fare to Bogura, previously Tk 200, was now being quoted at Tk 400.
Abul Kalam Azad from Sirajganj and Abdul Latif from Bogura shared that, unable to secure bus seats, they were traveling by truck. With buses charging double the usual fare, many are opting for trucks and pickups. For them, the joy of reuniting with family for Eid outweighs the risks.
District Administrator Sharifa Haque stated that, so far, passengers have been able to travel without significant issues, though vehicle pressure on the highway has increased. To ensure safety and a smooth Eid journey, around 600 police personnel, along with army units, are deployed across the 65-kilometer stretch from Gorai to the Yamuna Bridge.
