Bengaluru, June 04, 2025: The long-awaited celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ending their 18-year wait for an IPL title turned tragic as a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed at least 11 lives and left over 50 people injured.
According to a report by Indian media outlet Anandabazar, the incident occurred during a felicitation ceremony for the RCB team, organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Thousands of fans had gathered near the stadium, leading to chaos and the subsequent stampede. Eyewitnesses reported that many people fainted after being trampled in the crowd. Police were seen rushing unconscious and injured individuals to nearby hospitals.
A police official stated, “We could not resort to lathi-charge to control this massive crowd of young fans. Over 5,000 security personnel were deployed, but it was insufficient. I apologize for this incident.” The official added that the government had canceled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium for security reasons, but the overwhelming crowd could not be contained.
Viral social media footage showed thousands of people pouring out of metro stations, with some climbing stairs and trees to catch a glimpse of the RCB players. According to police, they had been managing the enthusiastic crowd since Tuesday night. A report by news agency IANS stated that police worked tirelessly overnight to control the crowd and prevent untoward incidents.
This tragic incident has cast a shadow over RCB’s victory celebrations. Authorities have promised stricter security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
