05 June, 2025 : Sohag Mridha, a farmer from Uttor Jhatibunia village in Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali, has been lovingly raising a Friesian bull for six years, which he named ‘Kalo Manik’. Weighing approximately 35 maunds, with a length of 10 feet and a height of 5 feet 4 inches, this massive bull has captivated locals with its glossy black color. Despite receiving offers of up to 10 lakh taka, Sohag refused to sell it.
On Thursday (June 5, 2025), at 8 a.m., Sohag embarked on a journey to Dhaka to present ‘Kalo Manik’ as a gift to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. He arranged three mini-trucks for the trip, accompanied by banners, a band, and companions wearing T-shirts.
Sohag said, “Today, I am going to gift this bull to the mother of democracy. Please pray for me.” He revealed that his desire to gift a bull to Khaleda Zia was inspired by a 2023 news report about a farmer presenting a cow to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “Now that the opportunity has come, I hope my leader will not disappoint me,” he added.
In late 2018, Sohag purchased a Friesian cow from the local Chaita market for 1.37 lakh taka. Within a week, the cow gave birth to a calf, which grew into today’s ‘Kalo Manik’. After selling the cow, Sohag nurtured the calf with local feed like husk, oilcake, green grass, and straw for six years.
Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, president of Amragachia Union BNP, said, “Sohag is a dedicated BNP worker who has raised this bull with his family’s support.” Sohag’s mother, Hajera Begum, said, “He wants to gift it to Khaleda Zia, and we are happy for him.” Sohag’s wife, Sultana Akter Poly, added, “Kalo Manik and my youngest son are the same age. I raised them with equal love. We are delighted with his wish to gift it to his beloved leader.”
